about

“Possessing a beautiful voice and if you’re looking for references then try Muse, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley and The Beatles – such is the strength of the material here.” Rocksound Magazine

En Route is the first album I made when I set up my own label TA Music. Many of the songs had been intended for a follow up Jocasta album, so this is still very much in the vein of how I began; indie guitar angst rock. It was the first album I learnt to design all the artwork for a CD myself – something I’ve done on every album since. It was a fairly simple design, but it was a huge accomplishment for me after mastering multiple programs on my Mac so that I could create a lyric booklet and album cover that I was happy with. This is the album that saw the beginning of me producing every part of the package.

I’d call this an indie album. The songs were recorded in multiple locations with multiple band setups – Rockfield Studios in Wales, the monastery in Thailand, Trident studios in London and my flat in Brewer Street, Soho, hence the title ‘En Route’. When I released this album, I never for one second imagined that I wouldn’t actually be in a band ever again. But it soon became apparent that making music that sounds like a band wasn’t going to work if I was going to remain a solo artist.

I wouldn’t make music like this again until Sonnet 155. But I love these songs and they represent a part of my catalogue that is really rooted in my early musical tastes (Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Radiohead). Other albums don’t suggest it, but I started making music with loud fiery guitars, spitting on stage and finishing my gigs by doing a headstand while the rest of the band thrashed their instruments. I still do that at the end of The Soho Hobo shows, but sticking to the single genre of rock for me, only really belongs on the Jocasta album, Sonnet 155 and this.
