about

“Tim’s writing is deep, melodic and beautifully honest”
Seán Devine (ASCAP)

For this album, I worked on translations of songs from my other albums with Chilean musician and writer Antonio Ramirez. It was an enriching process to learn how to express the meanings of the songs in my second language. It fascinated me. It’s much more complex than straight translation. Translation doesn’t cater for subtext, mood or style. Antonio taught me a lot about using the Spanish language poetically, so I don’t think this will be the last project I do in Spanish.

Growing up in Spain for four years of my childhood meant I heard as much Spanish language music as English language music. In the 80’s I listened to Spanish bands like Mecano, Hombres G and a lot of Joan Manuel Serrat. I adore singing in Spanish. It feels like there’s more permission to be passionate with Latin based languages than when you perform in English. At least that is my experience. For a short period of time I imagined that I’d be able to make a connection with the music scene in Spain since I was fluent in the language and also understood the history and culture as I went to a Spanish school (as opposed to the international schools that many foreigners attend in Spain).

But I released Hijo De La Luna in 2007 and have still never performed my music in Spain! Partly, this comes from never having had an agent or manager, and partly because I have never met anyone who is involved in the Spanish music industry. I wouldn’t know were to begin. It remains a dream to perform there, and I am sure one day I will, when it comes to find me.
