about

‘Ideas Are Bulletproof’ is a collection of Jocasta B-Sides and demos that are available for the first time since 1997.

Jocasta only released one album (No Coincidence, Sony 1997) before Arnold began his solo career, but the band also released half a dozen singles through Sony that were each backed with 2, or sometimes 3 B-sides. Most of the recordings were produced by the band with Radiohead’s long-standing sound engineer Jim Warren (Arcade Fire, Crowded House), who also produced Radiohead’s ‘High and Dry’.

The recordings demonstrate both the range of Arnold’s writing at the age of 18 when most of the songs were written, and a diverse musical spectrum shared between drummer Adrian Meehan, bassist Andy Lewis and lead guitarist Jack Reynolds.

Tim says: “In the 90s, B-sides were the chance to really experiment. There was none of the pressure that the record label would put you under for singles and albums. Whenever we went to record B-sides, it felt like we were being set free from the label.

It was a chance to express ourselves in the way we did before we were signed. The Land of Do As You Please was actually meant to be the first song on our debut album ‘No Coincidence’ until Sony made us open the album with the song that we opened all our concerts with. It’s completely inspired and in part, taken from Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta. The themes from V for Vendetta ran through everything I did between ‘95 and ‘98. We even named our own label V4 after the graphic novel. The character V resonated with my ideas of revealing truth through disguise. And of course, the title of the album ‘No Coincidence’ came straight from Moore’s “There is no coincidence. Only the illusion of coincidence.”

As with the band’s debut album ‘No Coincidence’, ‘Ideas Are Bulletproof’ is also a quote from Alan Moore’s V 4 Vendetta.

Songs like ‘Clean Ash’ chronicle 90’s Soho, whilst ‘Swings and Roundabouts’ point towards the singer-songwriter direction Arnold would later take in his solo career. Mesmerizing Milla was written about actress Milla Jovavich.
