In memoriam - Claudia 'Egypt' Boulton

'The Old King's Fool' is a song from Tim Arnold's 2010 Shakespeare-themed album 'Sonnet 155' and was written in response to a letter Emma Thompson wrote to Tim. Emma wrote "The most important theme in Shakespeare would be the transformation in the personality of King Lear. If we all understood we were but 'poor bare forked animals', we might be persuaded to 'hurt each other less'. The song was originally performed at The Almeida in 2010 with Benedict Cumberbatch in the role of King Lear.

In this version of the song, recorded at The Troubadour in London on 5th August 2021, Cordelia is portrayed by actress Kate Alderton and Lear is portrayed by actress and theatre maker, Claudia Boulton, who sadly passed away a few months after this performance.

Claudia's re-enactment of Lear's profound observation of the human condition is a beautiful and powerful performance by a master of her art, whose final soliloquy provoked a standing ovation at the reopening of The Troubadour club after the last lockdown of 2021. With the club's historical provenance of unveiling Gerald Holtom's famous CND sign in the 1960's, and it's role as a meeting place for the '60's counterculture, The Troubadour stage could not have been graced with a more perfect performance artist to herald the first steps of freedom into post-pandemic London.

Claudia's contribution to the arts and to the lives she touched with her unique nature, electric talent and lust for life shall never be forgotten.

This recording has been made available by Tim to honour Claudia, to share her extraorindary voice, and to continue experiencing her wonder in the world.
