A Guided Meditation (2020)

about

I’ve been speaking to a lot of friends who are expressing deep hurt and heartbreak about no longer being in rooms full of people and live music. Not being able to see family, and not being able to work. Also, a lot of friends who are simply reaching peak level of anxiety, panic, depression and practical worries about how to carry on.

When I was a practicing Buddhist in a Thai monastery just north of Bangkok, I was taught that ‘anxiety is the interest paid on trouble before it’s due’. One monk in particular took care of me during my first few months in Thailand. He was called Phra Hans, a fascinating individual who began life as a psychoanalyst, travelled to work with indigenous tribes in South America and then landed at Thamkrabok Monastery in Thailand where he spent the rest of his life helping many people out of all kinds of suffering, including me.

In his memory and for your well-being, I’ve recorded a guided meditation that he taught me. Almost two decades ago, I was in a difficult place that I thought I would never escape. But I got through it and not only escaped, but began to live a more uplifting inner life that I could never even imagine. Part of this is because of meditating.

So, yesterday, with two singing bowls and the words of Phra Hans, I recorded the 23-minute Guided Meditation that was taught to me and put it on my Bandcamp for you, if you should need it. Good for beginners and hardcore meditation practitioners. Headphones recommended ;-)

I hope it helps.
