Money Kills Love

about

“It could have been an outtake from side two of ‘Low’ by Bowie and Eno. Really effective for the film.” IGGY POP

Of all the songs I’ve written, Money Kills Love is one of the songs I feel most strongly about. There are many reasons – partly because it was for my brother Toby Tobias’ film, partly because it was for a movie starring Iggy Pop and also because it happens to be one of the songs that really allows me to be myself when I perform it. I sing a lot of my songs through characters, but Money Kills Love isn’t one of them.

The other reason it means so much to me is the crowd-funder I launched to raise funds to promote the release. This song put me in touch with so many fans and supporters I had no idea were out there who were listening to my music. This song helped me to reconnect to the community that listen to my music and I was able to become closer to them. The theme song for the movie ‘The Devil’s Interval’ is also one of my most beloved pieces of music. Whilst the composition is mine, the style was very much directed by Toby for the narrative of the movie and I loved working through that process with him. With Toby and Iggy’s support, being involved with Blood Orange gave me a genuine boost, and hearing what Iggy had to say about my music also filled in those final cracks in my confidence, and I have felt stronger ever since.

lyrics

When I need a friend, I’ll look into your eyes
Then I won’t see the end, I won’t hear goodbyes
Don’t call the curtain, ‘cause nothing’s certain
I still command an energy
Can you remember? The old familiar?
The best things in our life were free.

Money kills love boy, on that I know we are agreed
Money Kills love boy, so try to go with what you need

Have I found the light? Or has it finally left me?
I grew up just to fight, but the win was not to be.

You say they’ve taken all the meaning of
What it is that makes you feel.
If who you are is who you are, well that is really hard to steal

Money kills love boy, on that I know we are agreed
Money Kills love boy, so try to go with what you need
Money kills love boy, on that I know we are agreed
Money Kills love boy, so try to go with what you need
What d’ya need? (Can you let me out?) What d’ya need?

I found out, tomorrow just belongs to us if we can hear it coming
Come on sing along (Can you let me out?)
Tell me what d’ya need? (Can you let me out?) What d’ya need?

You can’t win, and no you can’t lose, if you don’t run the race.
So swallow up the truth. (Can you let me out?)
Tell me what d’ya need? (Can you let me out?) What d’ya need?
(Can you let me out? Can you let me out?)

Tell me what d’ya need?
(Can you let me out? Can you let me out?)
